Lesson Information
No previous experience in horse or carriage driving is necessary; we welcome complete beginners, who may have never met a horse, through to seasoned professionals.
We offer driving lessons for children aged 5+.
Our goal is to make our sport as accessible as possible, and we can accommodate individuals with additional needs, including the use of our wheelchair-friendly carriages. As an instructor with the Stella Hancock Carriage Driving Group, Dan is highly skilled at adapting his lessons to meet individual requirements.
For those who already have driving experience, we can focus on refining your skills and offer guidance for those interested in competing.
1 Hour
Good for first timers or those short of time.
- Introduction to harness componants
- Attaching the carriage
- Mounting the carriage, rein handling and using voice commands.
- Carriage driving on lanes/forest tracks.
1.5 Hour
Perfect for those wanting something a bit more in-depth.
- Includes everything in our 1 hour lessons, but you have more time in the carriage.
2 Hour
For those wanting the full experience.
- Includes everything in our 1 hour lessons but more time in the carriage. For our 2 hour lessons, we take a long drive around the forest tracks or lanes, giving you more time to practice.
Working Horse Lessons
Our newly introduced working horse lessons provide you with the chance to experience horse-powered agricultural work without the commitment of enrolling in one of our two-day courses.
What You Will Learn
- How to prepare a horse for agricultural tasks
- Rein handling techniques for various activities
No prior experience is necessary; however, a level of confidence around horses and a good fitness level is required, as all work is ground-based.
Please note: These lessons are available for individuals aged 10 and older.

- Rein handling techniques and groundwork.
1.5 Hour
Perfect for those wanting something a bit more in-depth.
- Includes everything in our 1 hour lessons
- More time practicing your techniques with the horses on the ground.
FAQs
What should I wear?
Although there is no strict dress code, it’s important to dress for the weather! Our lessons take place in all types of weather unless deemed unsafe by the driver, so make sure you wrap up warm in the winter. Wellingtons or steeled toe boots are encourages as the lesson starts on our farm, which can get muddy in the winter. If you don’t have either, something comfortable is a must!
Do I need a hard hat?
Although hard hats are activity encouraged, they are not compulsory.
Which lesson is right for me?
The main difference in our lessons is either carriage driving (in a carriage) or working horse (all on foot). The length gives you more time to practice your skills with the horses. If you have trouble deciding, please contact us and we can help you choose which one is best for you.
I don’t know anything about horses, can I still have a lesson?
Of course! We have many people come who have never been near horses before and take to learning something new very well.
